She was a promising young and talented student whose potential in life was limitless. The university has set up a make-shift memorial in her honor. In addition, the student body will hold a vigil Thursday night in her remembrance, according to the Daily Tar Heel.
Stories like this one are making college students across the United States worrisome and wary about living on college campuses. There are however, many protective measures you can take while at college. The first one is the most obvious one yet nobody does this.
Protective measure one: Never walk alone, especially during nighttime. Almost all college campuses offer escort services for both men and women for no cost. Do not be afraid or embarrassed by using this service. Remember your school tuition is partially paying for this service People believe they are immune to being a victim of assault or even murder and do not ask for the escort service, so make the most out of it. You should never jeopardize your safety for a feeling of embarrassment.
Protective measure two: Never drink from a cup that is given to you or that you have left unattended. College date rape drugs are becoming more common on campuses. Anyone can seduce you without your consent and knowledge by slipping in a pill into your drink. Make sure you are always vigilant of your drink to ensure that you do not fall victim to a rape or sexual assault, according to the YMCA's section on protecting women.
Protective measure three: Always walk with a cellular phone. Almost everyone has a cellular phone but it is important to have it out and ready incase of an emergency. Make sure you have the public safety phone number with you at all times. Their number is usually different from the typical 911 number. Public safety will respond quicker than the police because they are already on campus.
